Screenwriter and director John Singleton’s ‘Boyz n the Hood’ led to an Academy Award for Best Director, making him the first African-American ever nominated.

His first film, which he began shooting when he was in his early 20s, earned an Oscar nomination for best director — the first for an African-American.

Singleton was the first black filmmaker to be nominated for a Best Director Oscar in 1991 — he was only 24 at the time
