Director John Singleton has died after being taken off life support, his spokesperson Shannon Barr told USA TODAY Monday.

Screenwriter and director John Singleton’s ‘Boyz n the Hood’ led to an Academy Award for Best Director, making him the first African-American ever nominated.

His first film, which he began shooting when he was in his early 20s, earned an Oscar nomination for best director — the first for an African-American.
